What is the difference between MitID and MitID Business?
Both private MitID and MitID Business (MitID Erhverv) are components of Denmark's national identity infrastructure, but they serve distinct corporate and personal verification purposes.
Private MitID verifies the natural identity of an individual citizen (identifying John Doe). MitID Business connects an employee's identity directly to their employer's Central Business Register (CVR) number, certifying that John Doe is acting on behalf of ACME Corporation ApS.
When should you require MitID Business over private MitID?
Requiring MitID Business is particularly advantageous in corporate transactions where formal verification of employee authority is critical:
1. Corporate credit agreements and banking documentation.
2. Large-scale procurement agreements where the company wishes to verify the signer's company affiliation directly inside the digital certificate.
3. Board meeting resolutions and official company filings with public authorities.
Why many business users prefer private MitID for signing
While MitID Business provides direct CVR linkage, setting up a separate MitID Business authenticator can be tedious for smaller enterprises. Fortunately, Danish Digitaliseringsstyrelsen permits employees to use their personal MitID with assigned business rights, or simply sign as an authorized representative using their private MitID.
Under Danish contract law, if an authorized director or manager signs an employment contract or B2B agreement using their private MitID, the signature is 100% legally binding on the represented company.
